Pumping Out The Speakers

Good Working Music

Our creative projects vary extremely.  One day, we are hanging a small canvas painting on our wall, the next, we are designing a shadowbox for a treasured artifact.  A constant, however, is that nothing gets our creative juices flowing quite like a good record.

Music is one of the most profound forms of art, and frankly one of our favorites.  Whether we’re on shuffle, or playing songs an album at a time, you can be sure something sweet is pumping out of our speakers.

One of the treats about starting each day at the gallery is deciding which music to cue up.  We can create a cool jazzy atmosphere with the low hum of Nat King Cole’s sultry voice, or what feels like an Afrobeat dance party, courtesy of the booming vocals of Fela.

Our Story

Afrocentric VintageImmediately after graduating from The University of Oregon, Wisson and Mary West accepted a two-year volunteer assignment with the Peace Corps in Kenya, East Africa.  Seven years and several countries later, they returned to the States and resettled  just outside of Washington, D.C. with their two daughters.  Shortly after, Business Exchange International (B. E. I.) was established.

A cultural oasis for the local and global community, The Gallery continues to evolve– guided by the enduring vision of its founders.  Their daughters, Kadzo and Nuru, play a pivotal role in supporting The Gallery and determining the trajectory of its future.

 What We Love

We are a family-owned art gallery, specializing in the art of Africa.  We frame all types of beautiful artworks and install them for display in the homes and offices of their proud owners.

Besides art, our passion is education.  Combine this with a love for music and entertaining, and you’ve got a recipe for what we call #edutainment.

Every day is a celebration of life, and a rich cultural inheritance.  You are invited to join a bustling network of arts enthusiasts in the D.C. Metropolitan area.

 What We Believe

On your next visit to The Gallery, look up and to the right to see our favorite quote displayed on the wall:

“Excellence is the result of caring more than others think is wise, risking more than others think is safe, dreaming more than others think is practical, and expecting more than others think is possible.” – Ronnie Oldham
